Homes are still being foreclosed upon at a high rate. The foreclosure market will last for many years to come (this was written May of 2011). It used to be thought that buying a HUD or REO home was a way to buy under market, for a great deal, undervalued, cheap, etc. This is not always true. The volume of distressed properties and length of time the market has been flooded by them has created a new real estate landscape. These distressed homes are now considered more the norm, with the full remodel the exception. Banks are not nor have they ever been in the business of taking a loss on a transaction and push for the highest possible selling price on their homes. A careful examination of comparable properties and the market conditions is required to ensure any home purchase-distressed or regular seller or investor sale-makes sense for you, the buyer.
